Nigeria’s approach to senior officer lifetime compensation has just experienced a significant shift this August of 2025, and I suppose it’s worth putting pen to paper on this quite revealing development.
You see, dear reader, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has just affixed his name to a policy that would make a king envious. The esteemed Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo made the declaration at what they call a “Ministerial Retreat” in Abuja, glowing with accomplishment.
What’s this all about, you ask? Why, it’s about guaranteeing that select public servants will continue to receive their full salary until the Lord calls them home. But note this carefully – this luxurious arrangement ain’t for ordinary civil servants.
Certainly not! This special treatment is limited to those privileged few who retire at the elevated positions of the uppermost tiers of authority in agencies under the Interior Ministry’s umbrella.
The official reason – and I convey this solemnly – is to prevent these distinguished individuals from facing financial hardship. Fancy such concern! As if a high-ranking official with years of access to power would be reduced to begging.
This curious policy comes alongside other reforms including clearing a backlog of over 50,000 pending promotions and founding what they’re calling a “world-class Fire Academy” to rival the one in Arizona. Advancement continues, or so they assert.
In my study of bureaucracies devise ways to reward their own, but this perpetual payment plan takes the cake. Any thinking person would ask: Why not extend such generosity to each civil servant? Or better yet, to the ordinary folks whose money pays these salaries?
The disparity with other civil workers remains stark as midnight. Many a police retiree still bide their time for post-service compensation that wouldn’t keep a mouse in cheese.
